Crossing the road is about going from one end to the other. In between, nothing is tangible. People keep on asking: why does the chicken cross the road? In Singapore, we have our own version: why do people cross the road in Orchard Street? Scholars have quoted Decartes in the post-modern context: I shop, therefore I am. Walking is (or can lead potentially to though unintentionally) shopping. The only time you cannot shop is when you are in the "transition", that is when you are crossing the road. This is when you cannot stop to look and buy.
